WINTER STROKES

For many, the colder months are a tale of two sides. One marked by festive gaiety and the other somewhat more solemn post the holiday highs. Unlike many Europeans on the continent, us Brits tend to struggle with winter come January as the months turn a determined shade of blue and with it mood. Our Euro counterparts seem to nail these months sublimely as a time to snuggle down, hibernate and take inspiration from a colder stance.

For Dutch artist Lucas Thorik, winter proved his ultimate muse in his solo presentation of work titled equilibrium to open The ARX’s winter programme. Opened in December 2022 and now extended until 14 February 2023, Thorik’s radiant show explores serenity amidst the frenetic period of December, counteracted by hope during the coldest and gloomiest days of January.

Producing work via powerful abstract canvases, Thorik considers the space created between opposing forces and balance. Whether through texture, colour or size, a sense of balance is achieved through each piece.

Linear forms are depicted in each piece to which Thorik attributes as a reflection of the search for control. Occasional rounded and bulging forms represent moments of fanatic release. With hues crossing edges and hashed strokes, Thorik exhibits the unfiltered and real with the aim to depict a truly unrealistic, contorted and imperfect world. The representation of his works is left to the viewer to determine bringing a unique intrigue to the collection.

Gaining inspiration from London itself, Thorik was selected by The ARX to participate in their spring 2022 residency programme. The opportunity invites artists to spend up to three months in the in-house studio with the potential to exhibit works as part of a solo show with the gallery.

Lucas Thorik is a Dutch abstract artist, living and working in The Hague. His large-scale abstract canvas paintings are synonymous with layers of colour that create nuanced works to bridge the worlds of design, art, music and psychology.

Located on the Brompton Road in Knightsbridge, The ARX is a newcomer to London’s art scene and is set to redefine it with its ‘whole-home luxury’ concept bringing together art, design, craftsmanship and innovative technology. Housed within an impressive 15,000 sq ft space in one of London’s most prestigious neighbourhoods, watch this space for one of the city’s most exciting art prospects.

Equilibrium by Lucas Thorik at The ARX runs until 14 February 2023
