As an almost fantastical playground for the high flyers, wealthy and quite simply fabulous, Hong Kong is unrivalled. Its hot and sweaty city aroma is somehow tantalising while its unadulterated luxury is sensational. A city that always surprises, the H House team were left spellbound on a recent visit by one of the city’s latest openings – The Murray.
Delivered to us by the prestigious Niccolo Hotel group, The Murray is one of Hong Kong’s newest five-star hotels. The space occupies what is perhaps the city’s most-iconic landmark, the Murray Building, located in the Central district and opposite Hong Kong Park
Experiencing immense change, the site was formerly occupied by housing government offices for over 40 years to be sold in 2013 to Wharf Holdings, a Hong-Kong based developer who would see the site into a hugely celebrated hotel space. Four years and (a whopping) $HK3 billion later, the Murray Hotel was unveiled to the world.
And who better to craft their design work on this landmark space than award-winning British architecture firm Foster + Partners. Regarded for their contemporary design approach yet sympathetic to a site’s historical form, Foster + Partners have delivered a project echoing Chinese culture with a breath of revolutionary.
The hotel’s meticulously preserved, grand archways at entrance and breathtaking recessed windows lay testament to this. New additions include the hotel’s striking rooftop glass pavilion that house its leading restaurant and bar space.
In total, the hotel boasts 336 lavish rooms that occupy over 25 floors. The scale of the hotel unsurprisingly allows for some of the best views in the house including of Hong Kong Park and Victoria Harbour. Clean palettes of neutral shades and luxury statement furniture work in perfect unison with the heady energy of the city below.
Perhaps one pf the most-talked about aspects of The Murray is its range of culinary and drinking delights including a lobby bar in celebration of New York whilst a magical lounge serving afternoon tea is a dream.
Guests or diners can look forward to additional restaurants including Guo Fu Lou which will stand proud as a Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant. Proving the sky is the limit, we’re incredibly excited to visit Popinjays as the hotel’s very cool rooftop space with expert mixologists and international resident DJs to soothe you into the party spirit.
In total, the Niccolo brand has three iconic hotels to its name with The Murray its third. Existing hotels including those in Chengdu and Chongqing, with another two in development in Changsha and Suzhou.
Quite simply. Wow.
